Job Description

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), CNSM Department of Natural Resources & Environment and IANRE seek innovative candidates for a 9-month tenure track faculty position (approximately 40% teaching, 50% research, and 10% service) at the Assistant Professor level. This is a joint appointment with the College of Natural Science and Mathematics (CNSM, 50%) and the Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension (IANRE, 50%). The successful candidate will have the option to extend the position to 12 months through external funding. Possible areas of expertise include, but are not limited to: soil science, agronomy, soil nutrient dynamics, soil hydrology and physics, agro-ecology, soil genesis, agricultural production, high latitude environments and arctic soils.

This position is expected to teach approximately two courses per year which may include, but are not limited to: Sustainable Agriculture (NRM 210), Soils and the Environment (NRM 380), Environmental Soil Chemistry (NRM 466), Soil Management for Quality and Conservation (NRM 480), Soil Biology (NRM 485). You will also have the ability to develop other courses pertaining to your specialty and the university's interest and needs. You will be responsible for advising and mentoring students (undergrad and graduate), obtaining internal and external research funding, and providing service to our clients and community.

UAF offers undergraduate (BS in Natural Resources and Environment) and graduate programs (MS in NRE, MS in Earth System Science, Ph.D. in Natural Resources and Sustainability, and Ph.D. in ESS). Our programs integrate knowledge in natural science, policy, economics and human values to advance the sustainable management of agricultural systems. Students learn through classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory experiences, internships and independent research under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Our courses, curriculum and research directions were developed in cooperation with groups and agencies that work professionally with soil resources and management in Alaska. These agencies, including the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Tribal Conservation Districts, U.S. Forest Services, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, contribute significantly by providing guest lectures, internships and research opportunities for students.

To thrive in this role the applicant needs to have a record of excellence in teaching (including as a teaching assistant), experience or potential and interest in mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students. The applicant also needs to demonstrate research competence and ability to interact and disseminate research findings and information to extension agents, farmers and the public in a relevant field of study including but not limited to: agronomy, soil science, soil/plant interactions, agricultural production systems, sustainable/regenerative agriculture, and crop farming systems.

In addition, the applicants need to demonstrate a record of research publications and presentations, and history of active participation in collaborative research, awareness of and ability to incorporate innovative and up-to-date technology in research, teaching and outreach activities.

Minimum Qualifications:
PhD or terminal degree in soil science, agronomy, agriculture, crop science, crop production systems, sustainable agriculture or related field. Prior teaching experience and relative research is highly desirable.

Position Details:
This position is located on the Troth Yeddha’ campus in Fairbanks, AK. This is a full-time, 9-month base appointment, FLSA exempt faculty position complete with a competitive salary and full employee benefits package .
