Overview

The Audio-Visual Technician is responsible for the setup, operation, and teardown of all audio-visual equipment for events hosted at the National Western Complex and new Legacy Building (opening Fall 2025). As a key member of the Event Operations team, this position plays a critical role in ensuring seamless A/V execution for approximately 200 events each year, including the National Western Stock Show each January.

The ideal candidate has experience in A/V technology, event production, and customer service, ensuring high-quality experiences for event promoters and attendees.

Reports to: Senior Director, Event Operations

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Sets up, operates, and tears down audio-visual equipment for events, including microphones, speakers, projectors, screens, monitors, lighting, and other technical components.
  • Coordinates with and oversees management of third-party groups who may be contracted to assist with events, namely the annual National Western Stock Show.
  • Ensures all A/V equipment is properly stored, inventoried, and maintained to prevent damage or loss.
  • Troubleshoots technical issues and provides on-the-spot solutions to ensure uninterrupted event production.
  • Works closely with the Complex Events and Event Operations teams to meet event requirements and ensure high-quality A/V support.
  • Assists in testing and maintaining A/V systems to ensure proper functionality before events.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to event promoters, vendors, and internal teams, ensuring their A/V needs are met.
  • Adheres to safety protocols and industry best practices for handling and operating A/V equipment.
  • Supports special projects related to A/V infrastructure upgrades and system improvements.
  • Sets up and facilitates virtual and hybrid (virtual/in-person) meetings, ensuring seamless integration of audio, visual, and streaming components.
  • Maintains, cleans, and services all A/V equipment to extend lifespan and ensure peak performance.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Previous experience in audio-visual setup, operation, and troubleshooting for live events.
  • Must have a full understanding of a wide variety of A/V equipment, including soundboards (digital & analog), PA systems (mixers, amps & speakers) & sound mixing, projectors, video walls, and lighting control systems.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays based on event needs.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure proper inventory and storage of A/V equipment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced event environment.
  • Ability to lift and transport A/V equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with various departments and clients.
  • Basic understanding of networking and IT systems related to A/V setup is highly preferred.
  • Previous experience operating boom/scissor lifts preferred, but not required.
  • High school diploma or equivalency required; relevant certifications in A/V technology or event production preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and have a clean motor vehicle record, and be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Physical Demands

National Western Complex is a multi-purpose indoor and outdoor commercial and agricultural complex where dusty conditions and animals may exist. While performing the duties of this job, work is performed both indoors and outside in all weather conditions, including extreme cold, snow, wind, rain, and on varied surfaces. Our employees must be able to work indoors and outdoors with regular and prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures, must be comfortable working at heights and be able to work around moving machinery & equipment as well as live animals.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift or move items over 50 pounds.

Scheduling Requirements

While this position will have some set hours, schedules are likely to change on a regular basis based on the needs of upcoming shows. Early mornings, late nights, and weekends are all to be expected. Candidates must have open availability and be willing to work at various hours to complete the primary functions of this role.

Like almost all NWSS team members, this position will need to be on-site every day during Stock Show, typically for 12-16 hours at a time.

Pay Range & Benefits

  • This is a full-time, non-exempt/hourly position with starting pay ranging between $25.00 and $28.00 per hour based on relevant experience.
