Position Summary/Description:
The primary purpose of the Scientific Grant Writer is to support the UNC Research Mission by providing the needed knowledge, experience, leadership, and communication skills to liaise with national and internationally recognized Primary Investigators (PIs). This position will identify and secure funding for coordinating research projects, educational programs, and other department initiatives while collaborating with faculty, researchers, and administrative staff to develop grant proposals, manage the submissions process, and post-award implementation. This position may engage in manuscript writing and preparation for successful projects.
The Scientific Grant Writer is responsible for supporting several interdisciplinary programs/units based in the Department of Psychiatry of the UNC School of Medicine. These programs include the Division of Virtual Care and the Addiction Medicine program, among potential others. The position needs a high level of independent thinking and decision making to ensure that research program operations stay on track and mitigate the risk of delay in deliverables. This position entails delivering consistently high-quality insights based on mastery of medical communication skills and advanced knowledge/training in a biomedical field, facilitating collaboration and communication, along with exceptional editing and time management skills. The position will meet independently with lead PIs to provide expertise and scientific input on specific aims and approach for multi-component grant applications.Education and Experience:
Master's degree in relevant field. Experience in writing grants for psychiatric or mental health research. Familiarity with federal grant application processes (e.g., NIH , NSF , etc.). Proven track record of successful grant awards.
Essential Skills:
In addition to strong scientific and medical writing skills, the incumbent must be detail oriented and conscientious, and be comfortable communicating with staff, investigators, study participants, and other stakeholders internal and external to UNC . They also must have demonstrated ability to work and be comfortable in a fast-paced environment with a diverse team and within diverse communities and have a broad knowledge of interdisciplinary fields of research and research methodologies in order to facilitate matching clinicians and researchers along a common research interest. Excellent written and oral communications skills. The incumbent must have extensive experience in analysis and interpretation of the regulations, policies, and procedures of federal grant agencies, non-profit and for-profit sponsors, and the ability to communicate these regulations, policies, and procedures clearly and effectively to investigators. Proficiency in word processing and grant management software. Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in grant writing.
